An essential guano cleaning service carried out by bird control professionals.
Bird waste cleaning in Kent is a specialist task we carry out prior to installing bird deterrents such as bird netting or installing pigeon spikes.
Many customers call us to ask if this is something they can do themselves.
In short the answer is yes if there are small amounts of pigeon guano.
This can be removed with hot water and detergent such as Jeyes fluid or bleach.
Where bird waste becomes dangerous, and not so easy to clean, is where it has built up over time.
We see this in lofts and around buildings where the bird infestation has got out of control.
Our best advice is to leave this to the professionals. We have the correct tools and respiratory equipment to remove bird waste from buildings safely.
On completion of cleaning we spray the infected areas with a specialist avian biocide to kill secondary infestations to ensure the area is safe to use again.
We then recommend that bird deterrents are installed to prevent a repeat of the infestation.
There are many diseases associated with pigeon guano, (listed below) along with secondary infestations such as lice, fleas, maggots, mites and flies not to mention we often find bird carcasses which are unpleasant.
Psittacosis, commonly referred to as ornithoses, is a disease found in pigeons and other birds. It is caused by the bacterium C. psittaci which is highly infectious and able to spread rapidly.
One of the most common diseases spread by pigeons to humans is histoplasmosis, caused by the fungus Histoplasma. Like psittacosis, it is highly infectious, although it isn’t quite as deadly.
Cryptococcosis is caused by a fungus named Cryptococcosis neoformans and can present itself in various forms, attacking different parts of the body depending on the type.
The pulmonary form of the virus attacks the lungs and leads to respiratory difficulties and infections, with common symptoms including:
Most people are familiar with the bacteria E. coli as it is most commonly associated with food poisoning. However, it is also carried and spread by pigeons.
Unlike cryptococcosis, most cases of E. coli infections are not life-threatening. Most people who ingest the bacteria are able to fight off the infection on their own in less than a week. However, those who are more susceptible to illness may find themselves with lasting complications in the form of kidney failure.
Salmonellosis is very similar to E.coli. The infection comes from the bacterium salmonella, which is also a common cause of food poisoning. Most people who contract the bacteria are able to fight off the disease themselves in less than a week.
Before starting the removal process we will contain the waste and reduce the ‘kick up’ of airborne particles and pathogens by dampening the waste.
Bird waste is then removed to strong waste bags that are tied securely and sprayed with avian biocide before removal from the infected site.
Bird waste is removed to a waste skip. Once again, we spray the waste prior to transfer. Waste transfer is documented. The site is given a final spray before handover.
